I multi-task a bit too much for the new animated avatars and their little digital timers. They are left wondering why I haven’t clicked on them in the past “x” seconds and start their banter “I can’t help but notice that you’ve not clicked on anything yet.” says the guy from the UPS Whiteboard site. I didn’t make a choice for a while and he got all fidgety. He takes a cell phone call.  Then eventually starts to juggle… this guy is seriously bored waiting on me.  Hey man! I’ll be there in a bloody minute!  While the UPS guy was polite about the whole waiting thing, the gal at msdewey.com was downright annoying! I never want to hear her whiney voice again.  Hey, perhaps we could get Ms. Dewey and the UPS guy together to go out for a night on the town together while we get a little work done?
Is this the start of the age of annoying avatars?   The sitepal avatars were just plain creepy – the way they follow your mouse around. I thought they were going to be a short-lived fad, but now we have these young comedians popping up. The whiteboard navigation concept is sticky, though – and I feel pretty confident that you can transfer a lot of information in a short amount of time that way.  I am even considering the purchase of an electronic whiteboard so I can make screen recordings of whiteboard sessions without having to use my little 8×10 tablet. Perhaps I’ll set up an ebay search for it.
Hey, perhaps someone could make a browser toolbar or Firefox extension called the “Duct Tape” toolbar. With it, you simply “tear off” a virtual length of tape and stick it on the avatar’s mouth while you continue moving over the website. There, that’s better. Hey, haven’t you clicked on a new post to read yet?Â
I don’t really understand this “avatar” stuff, but your post reminds me of that stoopid little paper clip that shows up on Windows sometimes…acts all irritated about everything I do, then turns himself into a bicycle & rides away….I HATE HIM!!
